State MPs say their government is being put in a difficult position by the federal government's decision to approve a controversial pest control scheme in Queensland.

The Federal Government's approval for the proposed pest control project in the rural Northern Territory was widely criticised.

"I expect some process to happen as the Productivity Commission prepares the report and that process should be in full compliance with international standards."

Mr Field says he is hopeful Mr Abbott's government will reconsider the project, as there has been little evidence that it will be successful.

However, it will be interesting to see how much opposition it receives in the coming months.

Early winter sales boost national retail figures

The sales figures for March and April have been released by retailers – including the National Retail Federation – but the actual increase in sales was almost exactly 1% over the same period last year.

That was mostly because people used the sales figures to make up for the loss of holiday sales, according to data from Kantar Media UK.

The Retail Industry Association (RIA) said there was no statistical justification for the increases and called for further transparency from banks and insurers.

"When we look at all-time highs we're seeing a significant growth in the holiday visits, whether you're talking about people making a holiday visit every week or the entire season, the numbers are all up," he said.

"It's not only the volume of visits but when you're talking about longer-term trends and trends around travel, the people who visit on a daily basis more than anything else are seeing higher volume".

RIA chief executive Paul Hart also welcomed the growth, saying it was an improvement on the previous quarter in which the amount of people travelling overseas was down.

The RIA's figures were published ahead of today's Budget, with the figures showing that the number of children who stayed with a parent in England and Wales, while up, fell by 16,000 on the first three months of the year.

They also showed that the number of children aged five and under staying in care with a parent fell by 5,300 compared to a year earlier, with the number staying with a family member in accommodation at the start of the year rising by 2,300.
